Fullbacks

These gentlemen can be largely placed into two groups, those who served so ably, Aziz Behich and Michael Marrone and those who had ridiculously large shoes to fill Jeremy Walker and Sam Mitchinson. They were assisted throughout the year by a makeshift support crew of Jamie Coyne, Matt Thompson and at one stage, much to the mirth of our supporters, Jason Hoffman. Now while the future looks very promising in the form of young Walker, (aside from a few positional issues when he has in a one on one scenario) and Mitchinson has looked good in patches, members of the terrace have been calling out to see more of Phil Petreski for a while now and he should see more senior football next year. I’ll give a fairly left field suggestion to our left back problems in the form of David Carney, never quite able to recreate his national team form with a club, he’d likely jump at the chance to get back into first team football in Australia after his recent sojourn. Another suggestion is Shane Cansdell Sheriff whose been overseas for an absolute age but has always been a good left back and a good centre half, which is a good combination in elder players. James Meredith is a Victorian who played a bit of Championship football a few years ago and has been playing in the lower leagues of England, who can play a number of positions even into the midfield. Considering we were unable to resign Craig Goodwin and we now have a huge need for a marauding full back he’d be welcomed back with open arms. A long time favorite of mine Erhan Karahan will captain Richmond this year, a good Melbourne boy with limited international experience, plus the terrace could have infinite fun trying to come up with something that rhymes with Karahan.
