A change in direction

Melbourne Heart now have four extra names to be added, Iain Ramsay, Massimo Murdocca, Harry Kewell and Rob Wielaert, aged 25, 28, 34 and 34 they’re definitely being added to be more experienced players, with only Ramsay likely to show any major improvement in his game from now on, so should Melbourne Heart despair at the removal of their youth policy?

Most certainly not.

Firstly, Melbourne Heart has another fine crop of youngsters currently being developed, with Jeremy Walker, Sam Mitchinson, David Vrankovic, Ben Garrucio and Stefan Mauk all getting game time last year and proving themselves to be useful addition to the 11 and while this might sound like a broken record from this blog, we’ve lacked a useful set of players to help develop our youngsters, both on and off the pitch. David Vrankovic will directly benefit from Rob Wielaert’s many years of experience, including a few forays into Europe, Stefan Mauk and Ben Garrucio could have no better on field role model then Harry Kewell, both of whom would have lacked an on field leader who played in their positions last year, due to the eratic Nick Kalmar and ageing Fred spending large periods without game time. Central defensive pairings tend to be very tightly knit and given the success of Trent Sainsbury, David Vrankovic should be doing everything he can to make sure his name is selected as a centre half each week. This also free’s up Patrick Gerhardt to be destructive in central midfield, but I’m not sure all of Murdocca, Germano and Gerhardt can play in the one midfield, all of them are certainly good enough to be first team players, but there needs to be a clear role for each of them, as otherwise, they provide little attacking thrust.

So (hopefully) with a marquee to come, Melbourne Heart can make the 2013-14 season their own and with the blue half of Melbourne rapidly strengthening their squad for a premiership tilt next season, Melbourne Heart need to set their sights high.
