The final touches.

As we edge closer to the start of the season, with pre-season games starting to become a regular thing, Melbourne Heart has nearly completed its full squad, with very handy experience added, something that was woefully absent in last season, especially in the run home. Rob Wielart and Harry Kewell will add much needed grit to the central corridor of the team and should create a much more structured spine.

But even with all this good news, there are still several jigsaw pieces which remain to be filled, with the possible signing of Billy Konstantanidis on the horizon, Melbourne Heart still lack a tenacious tough tackling midfielder, but due to the shrewdness of HK signing on a free and Aziz Behich being payed by Bursapor, there is still some cash to throw around, even though its getting late in the transfer window, there are still some very good signings to be had, here are just a few.

Orlando Engellar

The Dutch giant has been released by PSV and finds himself clubless, he played at both Euro 2008 and was called in the preliminary squad for the World Cup of 2010, at a little under 200 centimetres he’d provide a ridiculous aerial threat and could boss the midfield as good as anyone in the competition, having been passed over as a trialist at West Ham, he no doubt still harbours top flight dream but the presence of ex-teammate Rob Wielart might be able to provide Melbourne Heart with a leg up, they played together in the exceptional Twente side between 2006 and 2008.

Simon Davies

While he’s certainly not the most in demand Welshman at the moment, Simon Davies just turned out for his local club Solva FC, spent a large part of his career playing as both a central midfielder and a wing, has always provided good leadership, exhibited as he lead his country during their unsuccessful World Cup qualifying campaign,

he’s also very handy around the dead ball, should his skills be required there.

Andre Bikey

He might have been red-carded for one of the worlds strangest incidents, but Andre Bikey would be a force in defensive midfield, paired with a ball playing midfielder, he’d be able to exhibit whats been the hallmark of his play throughout his career, tackling, tenacity and the ability to negate the ability of other players.

When it comes to strikers, the cupboard is a bit barer, but depending on what Alosi is looking for, there is still some depth in the market.

Jay Bothroyd

Although he’s never managed to fulfil his potential that his early career promised, with bags of pace for a man his size and the ability to hold up the ball too, he’d be a handful for most A-League defences and would be a good man to have at the point of an attacking formation.

Rob Hulse

Another cull as QPR try to get their wage budget back in some sort of order, has always had a good scoring record wherever he’s played, without any flash or extreme physical prowess, the pace of the A-League would suit him down to a tee, given the physical nature of the Championship, where he’s spent the majority of his career.

Stevica Ristic

Has forged a solid career in Asia, scoring regularly for Pohang Steelers, Suwon Bluewings and FC Bunyodkor, currently unattached.

  1. Wouldn’t mind Simon Davies or Jay Bothroyd really. Have always thought they’ve turned out well for the teams they played for. And seeing Bothroyd is a Cardiff City alumni….I think a certain Heart fan wouldn’t mind him playing for us too.
